Math vocabulary bridges the gap between abstract concepts and real-life applications. A key to instruction of math vocabulary is through both authentic mathematical activities, but also through explicit instruction.
For example, students need to learn the formal math vocabulary vs. informal vocabulary.
Split vs. Divide (formal)
Take away vs. Subtract (formal)
Total vs. Sum (formal)
More vs. Greater (formal)
Inside vs. Interior/area (formal)
Same vs. Cogruent/Equal (formal)
Word Bank Strategy:
One way to reinforce new vocabulary is to add words to a word wall. This is simply a visible location in the classroom for posting vocabulary where students can see them. It can be helpful to post examples next to the words to illustrate the concept.
